Dao Yin (in Chinese: 導引) means to 'guide and lead'. In appearance, it looks much like Yoga or Pilates: on a mat, doing various postures and stretches. In practice, the experience is very different. The exercises ask us to connect our front to our back, and the center to the extremities.
Together the concepts (Dao and Yin) ask us to do two things simultaneously: extend away from ourselves, while releasing back towards our center. Normally, when we extend our limbs away from us, it invites a strong tension (think of extending a leg in a ballet or gymnastics point). When we extend and at the same time create a release, the experience of the effort retreats toward the center. An odd thing happens when this is done correctly - we get more extension. The limbs are able to go deeper into their position, the joints are able to open more, and the muscles spread out, all the while feeling that the efforts come from somewhere closer and closer to the center. Slowly, we learn to extend, move and twist, all from our center, keeping a connection between our front and our back, between our center and extremities.
This workshop will introduce the foundational practices of Dao Yin as they are found in the Da Xuan tradition (which is very different from popular forms of Dao Yin).
Beginners are welcome, no particular experience necessary.
